ABOUT THIS CPD EVENT
There is something about clay that resists urgency. It takes time, it demands touch, and it cannot be rushed — which is perhaps why it has become one of the most resonant materials in contemporary design and art at precisely this cultural moment. This session brings together David Adams, manager of Cape Town publishing house and gallery Art Formes, and artists Siyabonga Fani and Okitosongo Kadima Junior, to discuss the landmark publication CLAY FORMES: Contemporary Clay from South Africa — described by critic Ashraf Jamal as one of the most important books published in 2023, one that reintroduced the art world to the vitality of ceramics. Moving across traditions as distinct as Zulu smoke-fired terracotta, classical vessel-making and contemporary sculptural installation, the conversation explores what working in clay reveals about making, slowness and material intelligence in South Africa today. In a year when Decorex is asking what it means to live well, this session asks a quieter version of the same question: what does it mean to make well — and why do the objects that result feel so necessary right now?
