ABOUT THIS CPD EVENT
Frank Gehry (1929–2025) was a
Canadian-American architect celebrated for his bold, sculptural, and unconventional designs that redefined contemporary architecture. He passed away at the age of 96 on December 5, 2025, at his home in Santa Monica.
Known as a master of Deconstructivism, Gehry's work is characterised by undulating, curved forms—often resembling sails or fish—and the innovative use of materials like titanium, stainless steel, and even corrugated cardboard.
Gehry approached architecture as sculpture, often beginning with fluid hand sketches and refining them through complex digital modelling. He pioneered the use of aerospace software (CATIA) to turn his gravity-defying sketches into buildable structures. His career was also marked by a refusal to follow traditional architectural "rules," often using "cheapskate" industrial materials to challenge elite norms.
